Estelline Cub Scout Pack 98

Estelline Cub Scout Pack 98 Estelline Cub Scout Pack 98 was reestabished in 2007 after close to 20 years of absence. When the pack started back up we wanted to instill into our young men good citizenship, responsibility for yourself, and community service all while having fun!

At the time we started our goal was to provide every scout a uniform, scouting book and dues for their appropriate Den. We wanted to make sure all the young men were on the same playing field, and were welcome even if they could not afford it. We are proud of the fact that this has been accomlished each year up to today.

We have completed several community service projects since 2007:

Every year we collect food for our local food pantry “Scouting for Food”. This goes directly back to our community while teaching our young men that at times families can not afford to put basic items on the table.

This year our scouts put together what we called a Scout Shoe Box at Christmas time. We collected items such as gloves, hats, candy, school supplies, and toys. We shipped the items to an organization that distribute the boxes to kids in the Dakota's that would not normally get a Christmas gift. It was a hit with close to 30 boxes being put together. The scouts collected and donated these items, wrapped the boxes, and included a Christmas card from Pack 98.

We have three very fun projects that we do at the Estelline Nursing Home. In the fall of the year we go to the nursing home and carve pumpkins with the residents. Yes it can get messy, but the older generation really enjoys the contact with our boys.

Next we go up there and decorate for Christmas, in less than 15 mintues our scouts have the tree up, decorated, and are eating Christmas cookies and drinking hot chocolate with the residents.

In the spring the scouts take the Pine Wood Derby track up to the nursing home for our race day. If you don't think it gets wild at the nursing home you have another thing coming. We make cars for some of the residents, and they race against the boys. Last year one of the residents had a RAT for the driver of his car, he had won several races until the tail of the rat got stuck in it's rear wheel, nothing but excitement, cheering and fun on this night!

Our scouts have been at the Legion several times over the years helping with pancake feeds. It's fun to try and teach young men as young as 6 how to cook while helping out at a benefit.

During our monthly meetings we work on our den books. We work on wood projects, cooking (normally at the Country Corner), proper flag procedures, fire saftey, health, crafts, and education on good citizenship. Usually in April we work with the Montgomery Anderson Post 184 on flag disposal. This shows our young men the proper way to retire our American Flag.

At the end of the year we go on our yearly camping trip to Oak Wood Lakes. While at the lake we take long hikes watching wildlife and picking up trash after the long winter. We learn about bike safety, first aid, what to do if you get lost, using the buddy system, proper fire building, and more cooking while at the camp site.

We try to include everyone in the family, when we do projects and if our scout has a sister or brother we include them in our projects as well. Without the scout families working together our pack would not be a success.

Estelline Cub Scout Pack 98 would like to thank the following:

  • Ward's Store for supporting us when we were starting up in 2007.

  • Country Corner Mobil for allowing us to use their pizza ovens, and supplies.

  • The American Legion Montgomery Anderson Post 184! They are our sponsor / charter with Cub Scouts of America, and they provide us a place to hold our meetings.
